Ingrown Toenail
Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocryptosis, occur when the edge or spike of a nail irritates and eventually pierces the neighbouring nail-fold skin. As the toenail grows, it can puncture the skin, resulting in inflammation and infection. This condition primarily affects the big toes, though it can also occur in smaller toes, with either side of the nail-fold being prone to an ingrown.
Your podiatrist will work with you to determine how to manage this. Usually either through conservative resection of the offending toenail edge(s) or partial toenail removal of the offending nail edge(s) under local anaesthetic.
