Diabetes Care
If you have diabetes, your GP may have advised you to see a podiatrist for a foot check-up.
Uncontrolled diabetes can affect your feet in two major ways: 1) Your blood flow and 2) Your nerve function. With poor blood flow, you may experience slow healing, and with nerve damage you may experience poor sensation in your feet increasing your risks for falls and injury.
This is where your podiatrist can help. Trained to perform comprehensive diabetes foot assessments to ensure your feet are healthy and to help prevent complications related to diabetes, your podiatrist will also liaise with your family doctor so that they are aware of your foot health status.
This care is usually recommended every 6 to 12 months, depending on your diabetes and foot health status.
